The mission sent an impactor and succeed to collect the material thus dispersed and brought back to Earth the samples which will be analyzed in Earth based laboratories.

This JAXA Japanese Space Agency mission completes Hayabusa 2005 mission to Itokawa. Launched on December 3, 2014, it aims to explore the asteroid 162173 Ryugu (1999 JU3) in 2018 and return to Earth in 2020.
