The Shanghai observatory has been founded by French jesuits in 1872 on the site of Zô-Sé, nowadays She-Shan in the vicinity of the city of Shanghai. It has its present structure since 1962.

Today, besides researches made in the field of astrophysics, the astrometry of solar system objects is studied.
