The Itajuba observatory (situated at the Pico dos dias at 1864 meters above the sea level) is part of the National Astrophysical Laboratory (LNA), one of the units of the ministry of science and technology since 1985.
The brasilian astronomy began near 1930 with a first project of telescope. The development of astronomy started really in 1960. Celestial mechanics was developed at the Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics and the astrometry of solar system objects at the Rio de Janeiro observatory.
