The summit of Mauna Kea in the Hawaii island

The summit of the Mauna Kea volcano on the island of Hawaii at 4200 meters altitude benefits from climatic and atmospheric conditions particularly favorable to astronomical observations.

In 1972, CNRS and INSU (France), the National Research Council of Canada and the university of Hawaii (USA) décided to put on Mauna Kea a 3m60 telescope.
