The Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan is located near the Syr Darya River and the city of Tyuratam (in fact, the city of Baikonur is 380km away). Founded in 1955, it is the launch site for the spacecrafts of the former Soviet Union, now Russia. Above left, site facilities.
