Most comets are not visible to the naked eye. We discover many each year which will remain very small blurs images on the telescope.

But whatever it is, a comet always has the same characteristics: eccentric orbit, sublimated gas and dust ejected form the coma and tail. This is the closeness to the Earth or the abundance of dust ejected by the comet that can make a spectacular comet visible to the naked eye.
