In order to send men to the Moon, the Apollo program was decided in 1960. It was necessary to build a launcher capable of orbiting very heavy loads: the rocket "Saturn V", which is shown opposite for takeoff against the Apollo 4 mission from the Space Center at Cape Canaveral, became the center J. F. Kennedy.
In July 1950, the first rocket, named "Bumper 2", is launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida. This two-stage rocket reached an altitude of 400 km to study the upper atmosphere.
