Images of the Sun at different wavelengths.

The appearance of the Sun varies according to wavelength in which it is observed. From left to right:

- X-ray: the brightest regions are powerful sources of emission of X rays (21 February 1994);
- in the ultra-violet, an image at 304 nm showing the ejection of much colder than the surrounding ring (14 September 1997) materials;
- a 171 nm image showing areas with very high temperatures such as the corona (11 September 1997).
- a spectroheliogram in H alpha line at 656nm showing the chromosphere (1 January 1999).
